What this calculator does
- Uses only Stages 1–4: 15, 20, 25, and 30 steps/min.
- Uses a four-beat metronome pattern: Stage 1 = 60 BPM, Stage 2 = 80 BPM, Stage 3 = 100 BPM, Stage 4 = 120 BPM.
- Estimates stage oxygen cost using the ACSM stepping equation:
- Fits a straight line to HR versus estimated stage VO₂.
- Extrapolates that line to predicted HRmax to estimate VO₂max.
Why the result is labelled modified
The standard Chester Step Test uses 2-minute stages to better approximate steady-state heart-rate responses. One-minute stages are faster for teaching labs but may underestimate or distort the HR response, especially if the participant has slower cardiovascular kinetics, inconsistent stepping rhythm, anxiety, caffeine intake, or measurement delay.
Stop and safety prompts
Screen participants appropriately. Stop the test if the participant feels dizzy, unwell, unusually breathless, has chest pain, asks to stop, reaches approximately 80% of predicted HRmax, or reaches RPE 7/10 or above.
