Modified Chester Step Test Calculator

Important teaching note: this is a modified Chester Step Test tool. The standard Chester Step Test uses 2-minute stages and up to five stages. This version uses only the first four stages and 1-minute stages, so the output should be treated as an educational estimate, not a validated clinical or occupational fitness result.

Method, assumptions, and safety notes

What this calculator does

  • Uses only Stages 1–4: 15, 20, 25, and 30 steps/min.
  • Uses a four-beat metronome pattern: Stage 1 = 60 BPM, Stage 2 = 80 BPM, Stage 3 = 100 BPM, Stage 4 = 120 BPM.
  • Estimates stage oxygen cost using the ACSM stepping equation:
VO₂ = (0.2 × step rate) + (1.33 × 1.8 × step height in metres × step rate) + 3.5
  • Fits a straight line to HR versus estimated stage VO₂.
  • Extrapolates that line to predicted HRmax to estimate VO₂max.

Why the result is labelled modified

The standard Chester Step Test uses 2-minute stages to better approximate steady-state heart-rate responses. One-minute stages are faster for teaching labs but may underestimate or distort the HR response, especially if the participant has slower cardiovascular kinetics, inconsistent stepping rhythm, anxiety, caffeine intake, or measurement delay.

Stop and safety prompts

Screen participants appropriately. Stop the test if the participant feels dizzy, unwell, unusually breathless, has chest pain, asks to stop, reaches approximately 80% of predicted HRmax, or reaches RPE 7/10 or above.
